Passage of the GST Bill

The push for GST gained momentum after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014. The government reintroduced the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, which was passed in August 2016 after extensive debates. This amendment gave the legal foundation for GST and led to the formation of the GST Council.

Launch of GST in India

GST was officially launched on July 1, 2017, in a midnight session of Parliament. It marked a historic moment in India’s tax reforms, replacing a complex web of taxes with a unified structure. GST introduced four tax slabs—5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%—and brought transparency, efficiency, and accountability to the taxation system.
